Deftones Bassist Will Recover

California rock band Deftones confirmed last week that their bassist, Chi Cheng, was involved in a car accident in Santa Clara, CA that left him in a "very serious" coma.

Frontman Chino Moreno told the Sacramento Bee "I don't know everything that's going on -- I just know it's very serious".

"Chi is one of the strongest people I know, and I'm praying that his strength will get him through this," Moreno added in a note on the Deftones' blog. "Please say a prayer for him as well."

Reports around the internet now say that Chi is in a more stable condition and is responding well to treatment. A statement on the Deftones' blog said Cheng had responded to his father's request to move his lower lip and his legs had also responded with movement after a tendon reflex test.

There was also a shout out from Cheng's family thanking the off duty EMTs who stopped to help Cheng after the crash, and to all fans who had left well-wishing messages.

The blog added: "Doctors continue to remain optimistic, and the energy at the hospital remains very positive."

Cheng has been in the studio with Deftones working on the band's next studio album, "Eros", which is due in spring 2009 via Warner Bros.

The Deftones' most recent live show was in mid-September in Peoria, AZ.

Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
